Fyrestick

On the early morning of July 26, 2009 our volunteer fire department responded to a call of a residence with heavy smoke coming from the structure. Earlier in the week we had received our Fyrestick. Upon receipt we held training on deploying the Fyrestick and the theory of thermal conversion.

This unit had not yet been placed in service or placed on an apparatus. While responding to the call, I instructed our first out engine, to place the Fyrestick on the apparatus.

Upon arrival, I found a single story ranch style structure with heavy smoke visible from roofline of residence, with smoke pushing from eaves of structure. After completing a 360 degree survey of residence, no visible fire was noted; due to color and turbulence of smoke I felt that fire had breached the attic space of residence.

At this time contacted my first due engine and advised them to set-up roof operations and deploy the Fyrestick into the attic space. Upon arrival of engine, no entry had been made into structure. Units deployed the Fyrestick into the attic space through the roof vent, - and upon deployment, smoke turbulence was decreased and it appeared that we had a high heat build-up in attic and thermal conversion with suppression of fire was achieved.

Primary search of structure was all clear with no occupants home at the time. Second arriving units entered structure to find heavy smoke in residence, after completing secondary search and ventilation operation it was found that damage and heat throughout the residence was lessened by the deployment of the Fyrestick.

My firefighters have praised the value of this tool due to this and the fact that due to the “misting” action of this nozzle the amount of water damage that was prevented due to the lower GPM into residence. Our neighboring departments were highly impressed with this nozzle and have since asked us for more info. Due to the size of our coverage area and often being limited on available initial manpower, we feel that the possibilities of this tool are almost endless.

This nozzle is very easy to deploy and can easily be put into use by one firefighter. With the design of this nozzle, it can be used unmanned as it “holds itself in place when deployed

This nozzle is of great design and a lot of thought has been put into it to make it “firefighter proof”.

Sincerely,
